Obituary for Etta Suchy

SUCHY, Antonia "Etta" (née Pinôjtic) - Peacefully on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Caressant Care on Mary Street, Lindsay, Ontario. Our spunky songbird has spread her wings and taken flight. She rejoins her beloved husband George "Jerzy" Suchy (1999). The family quartet of 3 voices, and 3 tambouras (Croatian mandolins) is reunited; father Stjepan Pinôjtic (1939), mother Neda (née Cacic) (2001), and younger sister Branka (1946). Watching her take off, the ground crew remains: daughter Christine Suchy-Shantz (Roy), with sons Edward and Arthur of Simcoe, and daughter Rosemary Suchy (Norman Cridland) of Toronto. There are many relatives scattered throughout Europe.

Mom's story is one of displacement and challenge, but also one of resilience, creativity and resourcefulness. The journey started in Croatia, with stops in Germany, England and finally Canada. She was fluent in 5 languages. She was a master needle woman and seamstress. She played piano, accordian, tamboura, and could automatically harmonize any song with her mezzo soprano. She swam and loved her tai-chi groups. She mentored our interests in sciences and arts equally and shaped our careers in those disciplines. She loved being around people, and gave cheerful smiles to others right to the end.

Our eternal thanks to Liz and Malou of her neighborhood circle, all the staff of Caressant Care Retirement Home and L.T.C. on Mary Street, and the St. Mary's Parish Community. As per Mom's wishes, there will be no visitation, but a memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 31 Russell Street East, Lindsay on Friday, August 19 at 2:00 pm with an inurnment to follow. Mom, you challenged us, and inspired us in so many ways. Your love was unflagging and continues. Safe flight little bird .... the choir is eagerly waiting.
