Obituary for Mary Jane Jewell (McLean)

Jewell, Mary (née McLean) – Mary Jane died peacefully but unexpectedly at Ross Memorial Hospital on December 16, 2021. Mary was born on December 28, 1930, and was just shy of marking her 91st birthday. She celebrated 66 years of marriage to her soul mate and dance partner, Reg Jewell, this past June. Mary was the loving mother of three sons: Dean (Donna), Dale (predeceased) (Carol), and Geoff (Lynn); and very proud grandma to Ryan (Laura), Deanna (Joe) & Richelle (Brad); Derek (Jenn), Brent & Alisha (Kyle); and Laura (Thomas) & Kate (Craig). She loved babies and was thrilled to hold her newest great granddaughter for the first time last week before attending a baby shower for the latest addition to the family due in the new year. In all, Mary had eleven great grandchildren to adore: William & Ella; Oliver, George & Hazel; Jack, Alexa & Ava; Brooklyn; Georgia & Scarlett. Mary was a smart, independent, and hard-working matriarch of the family who stuck to her regimented routine of laundry on Monday, groceries on Thursday (followed by a Buddy Burger lunch with Reg in more recent years), and baking on Friday. She always tended a large garden, and her freezer and pantry were full of the fruits of her labour. She was a terrific cook and was best known for her vast variety of delicious pies. Mary enjoyed Sunday afternoons with her family at the Fenelon cottage, and hosting the Jewell family Christmas each year. Over the years, there were many prize-winning quilts, hand-knit baby outfits and decorated cakes to share with others. Mary is survived by her sister, Dorothy MacMillian. She was predeceased by her other siblings Earl, George, John, Jean and Margaret. Visitation will be held at the Stoddart Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 21 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., and the funeral will be held in the chapel on Wednesday, December 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Stoddart Funeral Home in Lindsay. To attend, proof of double vaccination will be required.
