Obituary for Richard John West

WEST, Richard – Passed away peacefully at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Monday, January 30, 2023 with family by his side. Richard at the age of 82, was the beloved husband, best friend and soul mate to Betty Anne of 51 years. Proud and cherished father and mentor to his daughter Karen. Predeceased by his parents Wilfrid and Jessie West, his brother Lorne West (the late Helen), and sister Evelyn Curtis (the late Allen). Survived and adored by his siblings Helen Glassford (the late Grant), Dorothy Kay (the late Glen Kay and the late Murray Squires), Audrey Curtis (the late Alfred), Keith West (Cathy) and Ernie West (Shari). Treasured son-in-law to Leona Brownridge and the late James Brownridge. Special brother-in-law to Larry Brownridge (Linda) (the late Barbara) and Jean Crawford (Gord). Richard will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbours.

Richard was born on September 1, 1940 in Mariposa Township.  After working as a young boy on the family farm, he ventured into a short career in Toronto with the Ontario Government.  It was there he met the love of his life, Betty Anne and they later relocated back to Mariposa Township to farm for a number of years.  After farming, his next venture was in the insurance business for many years in Oakwood and Lindsay until his retirement.

For those that knew Richard, he was a gentle, kind, soft spoken and well-respected man.  He was no stranger to hard work and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to lend a helping hand or offer a kind word of support or encouragement.  Richard always had a positive outlook on any situation and found the good in everyone he met.  He touched the lives of everyone he knew, especially Betty Anne and Karen who will miss his presence, support and guidance immensely.

“What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” – Helen Keller
